The Beginner's Guide to Après Ski in Vail

by Kirsten Dobroth | February 11, 2016

Looking for the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon après ski in Vail after a day on the mountain? Vail Village has some great options to refuel with snacks and libations post ski day, but finding a spot already not occupied by throngs of thirsty strangers can be difficult to say the least. Classics like The Red Lion or Vendetta’s will always have a crowd, but there are some newcomers to Vail’s après scene well worth a visit. Check out some of the best new(er) spots for après ski in Vail Village that have been a welcome addition to Bridge Street.
The Blu Cow Cafe
Technically not new to the après scene, the Blu Cow Cafe was a Vail Village staple in the ’60s and ’70s while occupying several different locations, and made a return to the top of Bridge Street in 2014. Locally owned and operated, Blu Cow’s specialty is their veal dogs, although the chicken noodle soup makes for a warming snack after a day on the hill. The Blu Cow’s full bar and TV makes for a great spot to belly up and slow down as well.
Root & Flower
Forget the Fireball, and head to Vail’s very own wine bar, located on Wall Street in Vail Village. The product of two locals, Root & Flower has a little something for everyone, with a small plates selection that offers everything from caviar to paninis, and a beverage program that boasts high end wines by the glass along with a rotating tap of Colorado beers. As approachable or refined as guests would like, it’s a cozy spot to grab a window seat and craft cocktail post powder day.
Crespelle
Doubling as a breakfast and après favorite, Crespelle’s new location at the top of Bridge Street makes it a convenient spot to grab a crèpe on the way to Gondola One, or curl up by the outdoor space heater for a cocktail pitcher to share amongst friends. Crespelle had previously been in the location next to Gorsuch, but it’s new space allows for more indoor and outdoor seating, and, of course, more après-ing.
The 10th Distillery’s Tasting Room
The 10th Distillery’s spirits are all made down valley in Gypsum, and the Distillery’s expansive tasting room right over the covered bridge on Bridge Street is the perfect spot to watch the snow fall and sip some whiskey. If whiskey’s not your thing, the Tasting Room also offers the brand’s locally made moonshine, vodka, and infusions, along with a few barrel aged cocktails that are always available for a pour. On top of being a local product of local owners, The 10th Distillery uses Colorado ingredients as staples for their spirits. Although the Tasting Room doesn’t serve food, it’s the ultimate spot to thaw out after a day on the mountain.
