Breckenridge plans to expand to Peak 6

BRECKENRIDGE — The Colorado resort recently received approval from the U.S. Forest Service to forge ahead with its plan to develop 550 acres of lift-served or hike-to skiing on Peak 6. The peak has been regarded as a back country hotspot but will now be accessed by a six-person lift. The plans for development also include a 150-seat midway lodge as well as a ski patrol/warming hut at the top of the lift.

The plan has been met with some opposition from local residents and environmental groups, but Scott Fitzwilliams, supervisor of the White River National Forest, told the Denver Post that the Forest Service would continue to engage with the Peak 6 task force to address these issues.

According to Fitzwilliams, the plan has been implemented to accommodate for Breckenridge’s anticipated 2 percent annual increase in skier visits and to expand the mountain’s comfortable carrying capacity by 8 percent.
