Skiing in Australia
Legend has it that the world’s oldest continuously running ski club was founded in the gold fields of New South Wales, Australia. The Kiandra Snow Shoe Club (skis were also known as snow shoes back in the day) was established in 1861 in the Snowy Mountains by a group of Norwegian miners, and the group, now known as the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, is still active today. Sometimes it’s hard to grasp that the world’s driest continent outside Antarctica has a vibrant ski scene, but there are 15 mountain resorts there, mostly clustered in the greater Australian Alps range of the southeast. Perhaps the premier resort is Perisher, located in New South Wales not far from Kiandra. It is certainly the largest resort in the Southern Hemisphere at 3,076 skiable acres served by 47 lifts, 34 of which are surface lifts. Another notable resort is Thredbo, which is also in the Snowies; it tops out at an elevation of 6,683 feet, making it the highest lift-served resort in Australia, and has 1,186 skiable acres with an impressive, for this neck of the woods, vertical of 2,200 feet. In Victoria state, where the bulk of Australia’s resorts lie, Mount Hotham is 605 acres and 1,300 vertical feet of quality snow, earning its sobriquet as “The Powder Capital of Australia”.
